Ships’ radio is used for the safe navigation of vessels and for making distress calls in emergency situations. It enables communication with coast stations, port/harbour authorities and with other vessels.

Ships radio can include MF (medium frequency), VHF (very high frequency), HF (high frequency), and UHF (ultra high frequency) radio equipment. It can also include satellite communications equipment, radar equipment, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) and Search and Rescue Transponders (SARTs).

Tthe Short Range Certificate that authorises you to use a marine VHF radio.

VHF Radio Course leading to the award of the Short Range Certificate that authorises you to use a marine VHF radio.  This is a one and a half day fully taught course. We’ve tried the part self study part classroom course and believe that the extra classroom time works far better for most people.  This KEBC course runs over three evenings. Course fee £45.00 payable to KEBC. RYA Pack and handouts £12.00, payable to course instructor. In addition you will have to pay the RYA £60.00 for the SRC (Short range course) exam and to issue the certificate. This is payable to the examiner on the day.  Course dates Monday Feb 23rd, Tuesday Feb 24th and Wednesday Feb 25 th 2015, 6:30 to 10:00 each evening. Earlier start on the 25th for those wanting to practice their radio technique. Limit – six people. If more of you book we’ll run a second course.
